Do You Need Deviated Septum Surgery?

Injuries are never fun, but if you sustain an injury to your nose it can be a very painful experience. Whether you have been injured through a sporting or other type of accident, you may be suffering from a deviated septum. Septoplasty is an operation that can greatly change your life.

What is a Deviated Septum?

In the nasal area, the septum is the wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two sides. When there is a deviated septum, you will suffer from difficulty breathing through one side or the other. This can lead to multiple symptoms, including nosebleeds, nasal pain, chronic nasal obstruction, snoring, and difficulty breathing when exercising.

What is a Deviated Septum Surgery?

A septoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct the air flow and straighten the septum. This procedure is generally done under general anesthesia, but it is tolerated very well and the recovery time is less than several days. Patients will take one to two days off of work and can return to their normal activities after one week.

How Long does a Septoplasty Take?

Generally, a septoplasty can be accomplished in less than 30 minutes. A small incision is made on the inside of your nose to access the septal cartilage. Next, the mucous membranes are lifted on both sides and the septum can be realigned and straightened.

People who have undergone this type of minor surgical procedure have increased quality of life both during the daytime and nighttime. Their snoring is markedly improved and they can breathe better during exercise and when sleeping. This is a very common condition and people generally get used to living like this, but their quality of life can be improved significantly.

Do you need a Septoplasty?

If you have suffered a deviated septum or chronic nasal obstruction, ask one of our physicians if a septoplasty is right for you. The doctors at ENT and Allergy Specialists are happy to answer any questions you may have about your condition as well as any treatment options.
