Deviated Septum | Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Options

Understanding a Deviated Septum

A deviated septum is a common condition in which the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates the nasal passages is crooked or displaced. In some cases, the deviation is minor and goes unnoticed. But for many patients, a deviated septum can cause ongoing discomfort and breathing difficulties, significantly impacting daily life.

Causes of a Deviated Septum

Some individuals are born with a deviated septum as part of their natural nasal structure. For others, the septum shifts due to trauma or injury—sometimes from sports accidents, falls, or even minor bumps during childhood. Regardless of the cause, when the septum is significantly off-center, one or both nasal passages may become blocked.

Symptoms to Recognize

The symptoms of a deviated septum vary depending on the severity. Common signs include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion, often worse on one side
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Headaches or facial pain
  • Nosebleeds from dryness or irritation
  • Snoring or disrupted sleep

Because these symptoms overlap with allergies or chronic sinusitis, an accurate diagnosis by an ENT specialist is essential.

Impact on Health

A deviated septum does more than cause nasal congestion. Structural narrowing of the nasal airway can contribute to chronic nasal inflammation, facial pressure, and discomfort. Restricted airflow may interfere with normal breathing during sleep and reduce exercise tolerance, leading to fatigue and a decreased quality of life.

Treatment Options

Not every deviated septum requires surgery. In mild cases, conservative treatment options such as decongestant sprays, antihistamines, or saline rinses may offer temporary relief. However, these treatments only address symptoms—they cannot correct the structural issue. For patients with significant breathing problems, surgery may be recommended.

When to See an ENT Specialist

If you experience frequent congestion, sinus infections, or difficulty breathing that affects your quality of life, a thorough evaluation can determine whether a deviated septum is the underlying cause. We will review your symptoms, perform an in-office exam, and recommend the most effective next steps. Schedule your appointment at any of our convenient locations.
