New Studies Suggest Hearing Loss is associated with Dementia.

Hearing Loss is associated with social isolation, falls and poorer overall health status, however recent studies by Dr. Frank Lin at Johns Hopkins University show that age related hearing loss is associated with the development of dementia and poorer cognitive function.  His study cites a 2-5 fold increased risk of developing dementia compared to patients with normal hearing depending on the severity of hearing loss and cite that patients with hearing loss showed a 30-40% increased rate of cognitive decline than normal hearing patients.  Although age related dementia has many potential causative factors, studies are now being done to determine if hearing aids can help reduce the risk and/or slow the progression of dementia.

Hearing Aids for Age Related Hearing Loss

Hearing aids clearly improve social interaction and can contribute to improved health status by reducing the work of the brain to hear.  Although there are no studies yet available to definitively show that hearing aids reduce dementia, hearing aids may help slow the development of dementia in some patients by improving social interaction and decreasing the work of the brain to process hearing.  Our Audiologists will work with you to determine the best and most cost effective hearing aid option for you and will fit and adjust the hearing aid for optimal performance, often at less than industry average price.
