Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and tightens airways in the lungs. Our top ear, nose, throat, allergy and asthma specialists can help you breathe easier.
While asthma is often triggered by allergens like dust, mold and pet dander, it can also be triggered by exercise, exposure to cold weather, respiratory illnesses, certain medications, irritants in the air, or a number of chronic health conditions.
Asthma symptoms vary from person to person, but they often include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Tightness in the chest
ENT & Allergy Specialists offers comprehensive asthma treatment that includes screening, testing and careful monitoring of our patients. We will work to identify your asthma triggers, and help you adopt prevention strategies. Visit one of our area locations - Phoenixville, Pottstown, East Norriton and Bryn Mawr.
Medications that may be prescribed include:
Short-acting inhalers – Often called “rescue” inhalers, these are used to open the airways and provide relief for acute asthma symptoms. It is recommended that patients carry an inhaler with them at all times.
Long-term control medications – If you find that you are using your inhaler often, your doctor may recommend a medicine designed to help reduce airway inflammation and better control asthma symptoms. These medications are available in a variety of forms and should be taken daily.
Immunotherapy – If an allergy is the cause of your asthma symptoms, you may benefit from allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy, which help your body develop an immunity to your allergens. Allergy symptoms are usually reduced, and in some patients, symptoms are eliminated.
